Nishtha’s mother had recently been detected with uterine cancer. Between visits to the doctor, getting her medicine, and taking her mother for routine check- ups, Nishtha could not help wondering why her mother had been afflicted with this life threatening condition. Her extended family had no past history of cancer. Can anyone be at risk for cancer?, she thought.

India reports more than a million new cancer cases every year. Our country ranks third in the number of cancer cases only after China and the U.S.(1) Long thought to be associated with genetic malfunctioning, cancer is increasingly becoming a lifestyle disease. Several environmental and lifestyle factors can act as risk factors for cancer, and often ignorance about the underlying symptoms leads to late detection of cancer.

Air pollution, a diet rich in processed foods, use of pesticides, lack of exercise or obesity, alcohol use and smoking are some of the ways which could gradually make you susceptible to cancer. Treatment costs run in lakhs and have only been skyrocketing with every passing year. A patient not only has to go through physical and psychological trauma, but also bear the financial burden that comes with the diagnosis and treatment. Today cancer insurance can be purchased from the comfort of your home, office or on the go by filling a simple form. You can buy it for yourself with no medical examination required. All you have to do is choose the sum insured and the frequency of premium payment. A onetime single premium payment for a policy term of five years and regular premium either annually or monthly for a term of 10, 15 or 20 years or till the age of 80.

Once you have zeroed upon these two, you need to decide how you want coverage to pay out- either as a lump sum amount or with income benefits along with it. After this, answer a few simple questions about your health, pay the premium and you are done. What’s more, premiums paid by you are eligible for tax benefit under Section 80D of Income Tax Act.

A free look is a period of 15 days provided to review the terms and conditions of the policy. You have the option of surrendering the policy if you are not satisfied with it. A grace period of 30 days is also given from the date of missed premium, during which you continue to stay insured and enjoy all the benefits of your policy. Any claim arising during this period is also honoured, after the premium amount is deducted from the benefit payable.

Cancer can strike unannounced, taking you or your family members by surprise even if you do not have a family history of cancer. It pays to be proactive and be prepared to meet any eventuality. Cancer Insurance like the Take your health in your hands and prepare yourself for the unpredictable.
