The Human Safety Net program supports families with young children and integrate refugees through work.

To do so, we bring together the strengths of non-profit organizations and the private sector, in Europe, Asia and South America.

We are an open net and we welcome working with companies, organizations and foundations who share the same goals.

Where we come from

The Human Safety Net was started by Generali, one of the world's largest insurers extending its purpose of 'enabling people to shape a safer future by caring for their lives and dreams' to the most vulnerable ones in the society. Since 2017, Generali is mobilizing people, their skills, resources and its distribution networks to support The Human Safety Net's goals.

Who we are now is shaped in the first six years of our life: one million neural connections form every second at that age. By the time children start school, 90% of their brain is already fully developed.

Day by day, the brain is built through early relationships, experiences and opportunities for learning. These have a proven impact on children’s health, education and livelihoods for the rest of their life. Economists show us that supporting early childhood development is the best investment we can make in our children’s future.

Parents have the greatest impact on their children's development. That is why The Human Safety Net for Families program supports parents in vulnerable circumstances by investing in parenting courses and centers. Over 3 to 12 months, parents learn how they can nurture their children's development every day. They become more confident and cope better with their emotions and stress. Families also connect with each other as well as with relevant services.

The program shows parents how to spend quality time with their children through activities such as reading and play. These are simple practices and behaviours that have a proven impact on children's development. It also offers advice on key topics like health and nutrition.

For Refugees

Refugees have the talent and resilience to build successful businesses, but they need dedicated support.

Millions of refugees have arrived in Europe in recent years, many of whom have the skills, the passion and the resilience to be successful entrepreneurs. Integrating people through work is vital to welcoming them into wider society and will benefit all of us and our whole economies in the future.

But refugees also face special challenges when they start their journey to launch new businesses. Many find themselves confronted with complex regulations, a new culture and an unfamiliar business environment. Most lack the networks and resources for making their dream a reality. This new generation of entrepreneurs needs dedicated support.

Training, Coaching, Access to working spaces and Financing

The Human Safety Net for Refugee Start-Ups program works side-by-side with refugees to realize their business ideas through training, coaching, and access to working spaces and financing. Over 6-12 months, we support aspiring entrepreneurs to develop concrete business plans, register their ventures and start serving their first customers. They get the opportunity to learn about the business environment in their host countries and to strengthen their networks by meeting new colleagues, mentors and business partners. And if entrepreneurship is not the right path for participants, the program offers them professional training and hands-on coaching for jobs needed in their communities.

Good health & well-being Thumb

Today, entrepreneurs supported by The Human Safety Net are setting up businesses that range from restaurants to consulting firms, from language schools to IT platforms. They are contributing to making their local economies thrive.

As part of the program under 'The Human Safety Net', We have been focusing on 'For Families' component and are working with children and engaging them in activities that help them develop their social, emotional and cognitive intelligence. The program extensively works with parents where workshops are conducted for them as the role of parents in early years is most significant as the provider of 'nurturing care.' The workshops conducted include sensitisation, awareness generation, practical demonstration and problem solving. The content of the workshops is reviewed keeping in mind inputs received during the health camps.

Supporting Early Childhood Development

Children

Our program supports The Human Safety Net’s early childhood development initiative, focusing on children between the ages of 0-6. This is a crucial stage of development as it lays the foundation for lifelong learning and growth.

Demographically, India is a young country, with nearly one-fourth of its population falling within the 0-14 years age group. While this young population holds immense potential to drive the nation’s growth, it also represents a vulnerable segment that requires careful nurturing and support to fully realize its potential.

👨‍👩‍👧 Good Parenting Practices

Good parenting fosters emotional well-being and resilience. Active listening, empathy, consistency, and quality time are key to strengthening families and enhancing children's growth.

💧 Access to Clean Water

Clean water is essential to prevent diseases and malnutrition. It ensures a healthy environment, especially in underdeveloped areas where sanitation is poor.

In the heart of a bustling slum in Thane, India, The Human Safety Net, Pratham Education Foundation, and Aflatoun International launched a series of Financial Literacy sessions for local women.

Nagina-Generali-Story.png

Among the participants of the Financial Education workshops in Thane, there was Nagina, a hardworking sewing machine operator who wanted to learn something new. This experience reshaped her financial perspective and empowered her to secure a better future for herself and her family.

Before these sessions, Nagina’s was uncertain about her financial decisions and did not know how to manage money. Despite her dedication to her work, she struggled to distinguish between wants and needs, leading to unnecessary spending that left her with no savings and little hope for financial security. Like many in her community, Nagina had never received formal financial education and was unaware of the importance of saving and mindful spending.

The three financial literacy sessions, led by Pratham, became a turning point in Nagina’s life. She explored crucial topics such as the importance of saving and budgeting, differentiating between wants and needs, and the necessity of having a bank account. During these sessions, Nagina had a profound realization: she had been unknowingly misusing her hard-earned money on non-essential purchases.

This newfound awareness opened her eyes to the damaging effects of impulsive spending and the importance of saving for the future. In reflecting upon her journey, she told us that had she attended these sessions earlier, her financial trajectory could have been much different.

With this knowledge and determination to change, Nagina now wants to work towards financial stability. She regularly saves and deposits money into her bank account to protect her earnings. Additionally, she made a conscious effort to reduce unnecessary expenditures, focusing on essential purchases aligned with her long-term financial goals.

Through these sessions, Nagina learned how to manage her finances better and gained the confidence to take control of her financial future. Her story is a powerful reminder of how financial literacy can empower individuals to transform their lives, one smart decision at a time!

I never thought I’d have a bank account of my own. For years, managing finances felt like something beyond my reach...

Before the Financial Education sessions, I had no understanding of budgeting or saving. Most of my husband’s earnings were spent impulsively. Street vendors selling sarees and household items would knock on my door, and I’d buy without thinking. I didn’t see this as a problem until the sessions helped me reflect on my spending.

The discussions among other mothers made me think. We talked about savings for emergencies, children’s education, and healthcare. That’s when it struck me — my habits were holding us back. The facilitators explained how small savings, done regularly, could build up over time. They also stressed the importance of having my own bank account, something I’d never considered.

At first, my husband was resistant. He didn’t think it was necessary for me to have an account. But the Pratham team engaged with him, explaining how a second account could help us save. With their support, I gathered the necessary documents and opened my first bank account.

Today, I deposit small amounts every month. For the first time, I feel a sense of control and independence. My husband, seeing the difference it’s made, now supports me. Other mothers in our community, inspired by my journey, are opening accounts too. This change has given me more than just financial stability — it’s given me confidence and the power to dream bigger for my family.

Attending the Financial Education programme marked a turning point for Sarita. She learned essential skills to improve her family’s financial health and manage the expenses more effectively.

In a stride towards enhancing knowledge about family finances in India, The Human Safety Net, in collaboration with its local partners, has started a new Financial Education for Families programme in 2023. Reaching 1402 individuals to date.

The programme encompasses a series of training sessions designed by Aflatoun and UNICEF, each focusing on critical aspects of financial administration in the family. These sessions aim to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills to make informed financial decisions.

In Bhaskar Nagar, Kalwa, a Financial Literacy program has made a significant impact across 35 neighbourhoods. Sarita, one of the programme's beneficiaries, faced numerous challenges due to a lack of knowledge, particularly in saving and financial planning. Her earnings often disappeared quickly into immediate expenses, leaving no safety net for emergencies. She also struggled to differentiate between wants and genuine needs for her family.

Reflecting on a painful experience from ten years ago, Sarita recalled investing 50,000 rupees (approx. €570) in a fraudulent scheme, losing her money in the process. Many others in her community suffered similar losses, with amounts ranging from 25,000 to 200,000 rupees (approx. €285 to €2,280). Sarita lamented that a lack of financial education had left them vulnerable to such scams.

Attending the Financial Education programme marked a turning point for Sarita. She learned essential skills to improve her family’s financial health and manage the expenses more effectively. The sessions helped her understand how unchecked desires often lead to unnecessary spending, thereby preventing savings.

Through this program, Sarita and other mothers gained valuable insights into their financial needs, learned the principles of budgeting, savings, and responsible borrowing. Sarita's transformation highlights the empowering effect of financial education, enabling individuals to make informed decisions and protect themselves from financial pitfalls.

Sucheta is a mother of two little girls who attended activities at the United Way’s at Pisarve Anganwadi 2 family centre in Mumbai.

“When my daughter Rhea started to attend the activities at the family centre, I did not participate in the activities. I don’t speak English and I didn’t know how to support Rhea’s education as a pre-schooler. I thought that only trained teachers could support her. However, Rhea was actively participating and always happy to attend.

Project Ankurs palak shalas played a key role in changing this as it focuses on activities with everyday household items that I can find around. Thanks to the facilitator’s guidance, I learnt how to make educational materials for Rhea from recycled paper, improve her language development through stories and everyday conversations, and how to keep my daughter healthy. For that reason, we decided to enroll our youngest child at the same centre. The support available from the educators has enabled growth and positive development for my entire family. I now feel confident and thrilled that I can play a driving role in my children’s education.”

The renewals and colourful decorations at the Anganwadi centre, a family centre managed by The Human Safety Net’s local NGO partner United Way Mumbai, contributed to inspiring and engaging 3-years old Saad, who now participates with more enthusiasm in educational and recreational activities and has gained great results ever since.

Saad Asari is 3 years old and lives in Satkanadu village with his mother and father. Saad is an only child and receives immense love from his parents. While sharing the changes observed in Saad, his mother highlighted how Saad was not willingly taking part in activities at the Anganwadi centre and refused to go there on many occasions.

However, with the colourful refurbishment and the arrival of exciting learning material, Saad has now started visiting the centre regularly. He is no longer the quiet boy he used to be and now knows his alphabet as well as his numbers. He also recognizes colours, flowers, and fruits. His mother further states that she is very happy with the progress of her child and appreciates the improvements in the centre. She added that this might help attract many new families.
