Method 1: On the income tax e-filing website, without your login credentials
  • Step 1: Visit the homepage of the income tax e-filing website (https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home) and on the left end of the page, under the “Quick Links” tab, click the “ITR Status” option.
  • Step 2: You’ll be taken to a new page that requires details like your PAN number, the acknowledgement number for your e-filed IT return, and a captcha code. Fill it and submit.
  • Step 3: In case your income tax refund has been paid out, you’ll receive the ‘Return Processed and Refund Paid’ message.
Method 2: On the income tax e-filing website, using your login credentials
  • Step 1: Login to the income tax e-filing website and head to your dashboard. You’ll see a tab there labelled “View Returns/Forms”. Click this option.
  • Step 2: You’ll be taken to a new page with a box for entering your PAN number and a drop-down list of options. From this list, select “Income Tax Returns” and submit.
  • Step 3: Once you submit those details, you’ll get a list of all the income tax returns you’ve filed so far, with the newest one right at the top of the list. Each entry will include details like the PAN, assessment year, ITR form, filing date, type, and section, acknowledgement number, and status.
  • Step 4: The acknowledgement number will be a hyperlink that you can click. Upon clicking the link, you’ll be taken to a page that displays the timeline of your IT returns, like the dates of filing, e-verification, return processing, and income tax refund status. If your refund has been paid out, you’ll see a screen which shows the mode of payment, the refund amount, and the date of clearance.
Method 3: On the TIN NSDL website
  • Step 1: Visit the refund tracking page on the NSDL website.
  • Step 2: Enter your PAN and the assessment year for which you intend to track your income tax refund status in the relevant boxes.
  • Step 3: Upon submitting, you’ll be taken to a page that displays the status of your income tax refund. If your refund has been paid, you should see the mode of payment, reference number and the date when the return has been credited to your account.

Depending on the information you have, you can choose any one of these three methods to check the status of your income tax refund.
